Creative Assessment: "Bilingual/Bilingue"
|
Assessment: Write a "Bilingual" Poem
Basic Assignmment: Write a bilingual poem of at least 20 lines in imitation of Espaillat's poem "Bilingual/Bilingue." As people, we can all be considered "bilingual," even if only metaphorically. We may literally speak two or more languages. We may be learning to speak another language besides English. Even if neither of those scenarios is true, we may speak to our friends or our family in a different "language" than we speak to our teachers or our bosses or to strangers. Ground Rules
Assessment Option #2: Translate "Bilingual/Bilingue"
Basic Assessment: Translate the poem "Bilingual/Bilingue" Description: In the poem, Espaillat writes how her father "stood outside mis versos half in fear/Of words he loved..." Pretend that you are translating Espaillat's poem for her father. Everything that was in English needs to be Spanish; everything that was in Spanish needs to be in English. Note: This option is available to all students, not merely native speakers of either language. Ground Rules
* Keeping to the meaning of the original Sometimes, there are no equivalent words in one language for the words of another. Sometimes a word in one language has a very different "feel" in another language, and a straight translation would not capture the real sense of what is meant.
