Some Basic Information
My guidelines for choosing these books had a great deal to do with two factors: your reading level as high school students, and the cultural literacy value of the book itself. I wanted to give you a reason to read books you wouldn't normally read on your own (coughtwilightcough), books that would make you better-informed citizens of the world beyond these walls, and/or books that would be helpful for genuine literacy and future success on the AP Literature exam or in college. (By the way, this is a terrific AP Literature list.)
NOTE TO PARENTS: Parents, I value your assistance in helping your child choose a book that is appropriate for you and your family. Please feel free to pre-screen any book on this list or read customer reviews on Amazon and Goodreads. Remember that most books on this list were written with general audiences in mind and material that is acceptable for one family may not be acceptable for all. Your child has choices; moreover, if you have alternative suggestions for material that should be on this list, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
